Clinical Fixed Prosthodontics I
The Following is The Course Outline During The Academic Year 2008/2009
Credit Hours: 4-Credit Hours
* 0ne-hour lecture/week in the first semester
* Two and a half-hour laboratory session/ week
in the first semester
* Two and a half-hour clinical session / week
in first & second semesters
Pre-requisite: SDS 331
Sequence: Fourth year
Course Description:
The course serves as a transitional phase from a preclinical to a clinical environment. It provides a framework for the student to reinforce concepts learned in the previous fixed prosthodontic course ( SDS 331). This course introduces the fourth-year students to the clinical aspects of delivering patient care in the specialty of fixed prosthodontics. It is designed to teach the student to clinically apply basic principles of fixed prosthodontics. The student is expected to develop the necessary skills for gathering diagnostic information, developing a sequential treatment plan, and performing fixed prosthodontic procedures using sound clinical judgment.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, each student should:
1. acquire basic concepts necessary for the diagnosis and treatment planning of simple fixed prostheses.
2. bring together the knowledge and skills for a successful management of different clinical fixed prosthetic cases.
3. acquire experience of performing different types of tooth preparations of abutments of fixed prostheses.
4. acquire the knowledge and skills to fabricate a biologically compatible and esthetically and functionally acceptable provisional crown.
5. acquire the knowledge and skills to safely manage soft tissues for making impressions of prepared tooth/teeth.
6. acquire a clinical experience utilizing a face bow, inter-occlusal records and semi-adjustable articulators for mounting clinical cases.
7. acquire an experience in performing some laboratory procedures for fabrication of fixed prostheses.
8. develop a good dentist-laboratory technician relationship.
9. properly deliver fixed prostheses.
10. acquire an introductory preclinical experience of restoring missing tooth/teeth with dental implants.
11. acquire an introductory experience of restoring missing tooth structure with procera dental material.
Course Requirements:
Each student is required to:
· complete a minimum of two fixed prosthodontic cases with 6 units which can be in a form of a single crown, 3-unit fixed partial denture and post and core restorations.
· Perform all laboratory work concerning her clinical cases up to the stage of fabricating the custom tray for making the final impresstion.
· perform all assigned laboratory projects, competency tests and exams and submit them on time.
· complete three clinical exams.
Course Protocols:
1. It is not allowed to dismiss or transfer patients from this course to another one or from a student to another one without the approval of the course director.
2. A student is allowed to start the treatment procedure only after a definitive treatment plan is approved and signed in the patient's file by the clinical instructor supervising the student.
3. A student is allowed to start to perform any clinical / laboratory procedure only after a pre-operative check-up is done by the clinical instructor supervising the student.
4. Improper management of the case, repeated ignorance to instructions, repeated irreversible damage, improper behavior with patients, dental assistants and/or clinical instructors will have a negative impact on student grade.
5. The student should finish the clinical/laboratory work during the allotted clinical time.
6. The Final evaluation is based on the number of complete cases, proper management of the allotted clinical time, knowledge, performance of clinical procedures and proper behavior.
7. Discussion and questions about the on-going clinical procedure can be conducted at any time by any clinical instructor during the regular clinical session. This is considered as part of the clinical evaluation of the student.
8. Any clinical procedure that is performed by the student should be recorded in the patient's file at each clinical session. The student should also write clearly her name, university number and signature. This should be followed by the signature of the clinical instructor supervising the student.
9. Students are expected to submit all assigned laboratory projects and complete clinical and laboratory competency exams on time.
10. Attendance of students in lecture, laboratory and clinic is mandatory. Student absence at any lecture or clinical/laboratory sessions is absolutely not acceptable. Being ten minutes late to the lecture or fifteen minutes late to the clinical/laboratory sessions is considered as absent. When more than 25% of the lecture, laboratory or the clinical sessions is missed, the student will be deprived from taking the final exam according to university rules and regulations.
11. Professionalism is expected from students at all times. Coordination with the Booking Area to book patients is the responsibility of the students.
Evaluation:
The student should pass each of the didactic and clinical/laboratory components of the course separately.
