Setnotes: Classroom Methodology for teaching Translation Courses

Content and Objectives

In this course students are expected to handle more complex material from a wider variety of texts. Translation will be from Arabic into English.

 

Skills

To analyse more complex structures in the two languages.

To develop a  practical competence in discerning spots of difficulty in the translation process

To diagnose the root of the difficulty i.e is it syntactical, morphological, social mismatch or otherwise?

 

 

Weekly Schedule

Week One:        General introduction, and telling the student where to buy the setnotes

Week Two          Discussing the translation of the first two texts in the setbook       

Week Three        Discussing the translation of the other two texts in the set notes

Week Four -six                Selecting some texts from the set texts to be translated at home and discussed in the class.

1st Midterm test

 

Week Seven-Ten    Selecting texts to be translated at home and discussed in the class       

     2nd Midterm test

 

Week Eleven -fourteen             Selecting some more complex texts to be translated at home and discussed in the class

Final exam
