COURSE TITLE:BILINGUAL STUDIES
Course Objectives: To familiarize the students with the general phenomenon, needs & problems of bilingual and bi-dialectal communicators.
Course Description: The study of bilingual and bi-dialectal variations of human communication that occur as a function of culture, environment, social and other differences. Emphasis on bilingual and bi-dialectal assessment and environment.
Week 1 Definition and description of bilingualism.
Week 2 Types of bilingualism
Week 3 Degrees of bilingualism
Week 4 Functions of languages, external and internal functions.
Week 5 Alternation between languages.
Week 6 Phenomenon of interference and code switching. Effects of
bilingualism, negative and positive effects on Intelligence.
Week 7 Mid term exam I
Week 8 Negative and positive effects on linguistic and cognitive
Week 9 Effects on emotional status. Mother tongue and emotional
Adjustment. Performance of bilingualism.
Week 10 Methods adopted in language acquisition studies and some
illustrative techniques. Bilinguals performance on translation.
Week 11 Midterm exam II
Week 12 Measurement of bilingualism.
Week 13 Problems of bilingual speakers. Discussion on studies.
Week 14 Bilingual education programs.
Week 15 Revision. Discussion on assignments.
