Syllabus and Course Description

                                                                                                                                                                    

Course Description:

This composition course aims at introducing students to basic concepts of paragraph writing which covers: pre-writing techniques and moves onward to a more defined paragraph-related elements including; restricted topics, developed topic sentences, well-organized and an  effective support of the controlling idea, as well as coherence and unity.                              

 Two kinds of paragraphs are highlighted in this course; the narrative  paragraph, and the descriptive paragraph.

Smalley, Regina L.; Ruetten, Mary K. & Kozyrev, Joann R.  (2000). Refining Composition Skills:  Rhetoric & Grammar. 5th edition. Heinle & Heinle Publishers: NY.

Grades Distribution:

15% 1st in-term exam

15% 2nd in-term exam

5% class work

5% home assignments

60% final exam

 Academic Calendar:

Week 1: Add and Drop.

Week 2: General introduction to the course, Chp.1, "The Writing Process."

Week 3: Chp.2, "Introduction to the Paragraph."

Week 4: Chp.2, "Introduction to the Paragraph."

Week 5: Chp.3, "The Narrative Paragraph, present narration."

Week 6: Chp.3, "The Narrative Paragraph, present narration."

Week 7: Chp.3, "The Narrative Paragraph, past narration."

Week 8: Chp.3, "The Narrative Paragraph, past narration," 1st in-term exam (on Wednesday 22-4-2009)

Week 9: Mid. Semester Break.

Week 10: Discussion of the in-term exam papers, Chp.4, "The Descriptive Paragraph."  

Week 11: Chp.4, "The Descriptive Paragraph."

Week 12: Chp.4, "The Descriptive Paragraph."

Week 13: Chp.4, "The Descriptive Paragraph," 2nd in-term exam (on Wednesday 27 -5- 2009.)

Week 14: Discussion of the in-term exam papers, Chp.4, "The Descriptive Paragraph."

Week 15: Course wrap up.
