Abstract

This study aims at identifying the differences between grade-six pupils in terms of their achievement in the subject of science at Al-Aasimah Institute in Riyadh City. One group, namely the study group, studied this subject with the help of a multimedia computer program, while another group, namely the control one, studied it in the traditional way. These differences are related to the pupils' memory, understanding and application according to Blom's Classification.

The study has attempted to answer the following questions:

1.     Are there statistically significant differences (with 0.05 significance level) between the mean grades of the study group and those of the control one in the pre-study measurement of academic achievement of grade-six pupils in the subject of science according to Blom's Classification (memory, understanding and application)?

2.     Are there statistically significant differences (with 0.05 significance level) between the mean grades of the study group and those of the control one in the post-study measurement of academic achievement of grade-six pupils in the subject of science according to Blom's Classification (memory, understanding and application)?

3.     Are there statistically significant differences (with 0.05 significance level) between the mean grades of the study group and those of the control one in the pre-study and post-study measurement of academic achievement of grade-six pupils in the sucject of science according to Blom's Classification (memory, understanding and application)?

To answer these questions, the researcher has designed a content-based achievement test, which has been tested for reliability and validity.

The study sample, which has been chosen randomly, consists of two groups. The first is the study group who have studied the subject of science with the help of a multimedia computer program. The second is the control group who have studied it in the traditional way.

The results of the study have been the following:

1.     There are no statistically significant differences (with 0.05 significance level) between the mean grades of the study group and those of the control one in the pre-study measurement of academic achievement of grade-six pupils in the subject of science according to Blom's Classification (memory, understanding and application). This shows that the two groups were alike before the study has been carried out.

2.     There are statistically significant differences (with 0.05 significance level) between the mean grades of the study group and those of the control one in the post-study measurement of academic achievement of grade-six pupils in the subject of science according to Blom's Classification (memory, understanding and application). Members of the study group have achieved more than those of the control one.

Due to these results, the researcher has made the following recommendations:

1.      Introducing educational technology in all different educational levels.

2.      Adopting certain mechanisms which give pupils the chance of self learning inside and outside school.

3.      Relying on specialists in educational technology, syllabus design and psychology in the production of high quality multimedia educational programs.
