By the end of the course candidate will be able:

1.     To become familiar with different techniques of regional block (spinal, epidural, CSE) for both analgesia and anaesthesia and walking epidural in obstetrics.

2.     To learn how to manage major obstetric hemorrhages & mishaps (total spinal epidural taps, etc…).

V.      SKILLS:

 
 

 

 

 


1.     Preoperative assessment, airway assessment and pre-medications.

2.     Preparation of I.V. inductions drugs in case of emergency.

3.     Insertion of proper size of I.V. lines pre load.

4.     Proper positioning of patients monitoring.

5.     Identification of epidural space.

6.     Complete aseptic technique precautions

7.     Test dose

8.     Insertion of epidural catheter

9.     Top up doses

10.                        Writing clear instructions for midwives.

11.                        Assessment of sensory & motor power.

12.                        Proper management in case of epidural tap.

13.                        Proper management in case of total spinal anaesthesia.

VI.    MUST FAIL CRITERIA:

 
 

 

 

 


1.     Failure to preoperative assessment & Premedication (for CS)

2.     Failure to prepare crash induction drugs.

3.     Failure to insert two (2) large bore I.V. cannula for CS.

4.     Failure to use monitoring equipment.

5.     Failure to identify epidural space.

6.     Did not use aseptic technique.

7.     Unable to do proper management in case of emergency situations e.g. total spinal, epidural tap.

8.     Failure to use test dose.

9.     Failure to use proper top up doses.

10.                        Failure to avoid aorto-caval compression.

11.                        Failure to diagnose accidental I.V. injections of local anaesthetics.

12.                        Failure to diagnose & manage total spinal anaesthesia.

13.                        Failure to use ephedrine & other agonist, for hypotension.

14.                        Does not know to perform epidural technique.
