Since the last 35 years, every year 3-4 times at different seasons trips were organized to various parts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its islands. These trips consists of various tasks, including collection of medicinal plants, spot the location by registering GPS, preserve samples of plants along with detailed botanical information and soil and weather conditions etc.
These expeditions are not only confined to plant collection but to gather information about folkloric and traditional knowledge by elderly citizens and traditional healers by interviewing about the proper utilization of medicinal herbs. After collection the maximum possible information of therapeutic usefulness, the collected plants subjected to botanical identification, preservation of sample for future reference, a literature survey is conducted to gather further information if available on these plants. After drying the plant it is transferred to the phytochemical laboratory for its chemical analysis in order to isolate, purify, identify and characterize the chemically active constituents.
These chemical constituents and crude extracts, based on the folkloric information, are further tested on laboratory animals using suitable experimental models, e.g. if the healer claims about some specific plant which possess antidiabetic property, then the extract of that particular plant is tested in animals by producing diabetes to confirm the claims of herbal practitioners. The toxicity of those plants are also checked in animals.
The obtained results published in scientific journals.
