Description of Course Contents:

The course deals with the different criteria used for the evaluation of drugs of plant and animal origins. The study, which will cover the drugs both in the crude form and in the form of pharmaceutical preparations, will include methods to test their purity, physical and microscopic properties, constituents and contaminants Including filth, herbicides and any additives. The current regulations of the Ministry of Health concerning these drugs will be discussed as they pertain to each item.

Introduction about herbal and animal drugs and their preparations.

Techniques used for the evaluation of vegetable and animal drugs including physico-chemical, organoleptic, microscopic (qualitative and quantitative) and separa­tion methodologies. Emphasis will be on the procedures used for microdetermination of these drugs, and detection of micro levels of their active constituents.

Detection of substitutes, adulterants, contaminants of herbal and animal drugs includ­ing decomposition products, filth, herbicides and additives.

Schematic application of the above procedures for the evaluation of selected drugs in form of powders, pills, tablets, capsules, ointments, tinctures, extracts, teas, suppositories and other preparations.

Equipment, reagents and references used for setting up herbal and animal drug evaluation laboratory conforming with the regulations of the Ministry of Health.
