Description of Course Contents:

The objective of the course is two-fold, namely , to outline the different sources of drugs of abuse, their description and chemical  nature together with an in-depth discussion of the methodologies used for professionally detecting them, by drug abuse testing, sample collecting, work-up and storage, documentation, threshold level and legal defensibility of the result will be discussed.

Practical Syllabus:

A demonstration exhibiting  the different types of drugs of abuse for the students to note their appearance and characteristic features. Drugs to be shown will include : opium, hashish, fresh khat plants, coca leaves, nutmeg, pyote, alcohol and commonly sniffed solvents.

Slides and pictures of these drugs and related paraphernalia will be also shown.

Microcrystal and Quick test identification of morphine, heroin, codeine, cocaine, amphetamine, ephedrine and diazepam. The student will familiarize himself with the characteristic color and crystalline form given by each compound.

Preparation of the cocaine metabolite benzylecogonine and its chemical characterization by physical and spectroscopic means.

Detection of cannabis smoke condensate by microextraction by TLC analysis using standard cannabis constituents as references and spray with the differentiating spray reagent (Fast blue salt B e.g.)

The use of drug abuse screening kits for screening urine subjects for amphetamines, morphine, 9rTHC and its metabolites and cocaine and its metabolites.

Demonstration of the principle and operation of the breathanalyzer used for alcohol detection. Gas chromatographic determination of alcohol in blood.

HPLC determination of heroin and its metabolites using a reference standard.

Identification of drugs in urine by using different techniques.

HPLC determination of Cannabis and its metabolites using a reference standard.

GC and GC-MS quantitative determination of Cannabis and its metabolites in body fluids.

A visit to drug abuse testing labs.

Examinations: Should cover two separate practical examinations during the course
