PPS 105: Plant Production System (2+0)

Course Content

An introduction to plant production covering plant environment and its effects on production. Cultural practices. Cropping systems (field crops, horticultural crops). Controlled environment agriculture systems. Recent trends in plant production.

Course Objective

This is an introductory course required for all undergraduate students of the College of Food & Agricultural Sciences. It is aimed to introduce to students to various systems of plant production with particular emphasis on modern practices in the Kingdom. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to obtain an understanding of the following topics:

  • A brief history of man and agriculture

  • Influence of environmental factors on plant production

  • Different systems of plant production

  • Recent trends in plant production

Textbook

No textbook is required. However, as a reference, students are encouraged to obtain a copy of the book titled: Principles of Plant Production,  3rd edition, King Saud University Press. This book was written by a group of former faculty members of the department.

Examinations 

There will be four 1-HOUR-LONG EXAMINATIONS during the semester, and a FINAL EXAMINATION. Exams are scheduled as listed on the lecture outline below. The final exam will be comprehensive.  Each examination will weigh 100 points. Grades will be based on the percentage of total points acquired in the examinations.

Attendance

Under the University regulations, students will not be allowed to sit for the final exam, and will fail the course if their absence exceeds 25% of the total number of lectures. A grade Denied (DN) will be shown in his transcript.
