The Nervous System is one of the first systems to differentiate in the developing embryo. The neural plate forms at about the 3rd week of gestation. The neural plate is derived from midline ectoderm (neurectoderm). Neural tube closure defects result in spina bifida or anencephaly at this early stage of development.
