•Reconstructed Fast-Spiking Interneuron (Smooth
Stellate Neuron) from Rat Somatosensory Barrel Cortex found on Home Page is
courtesy of Peter W. Land, PhD, Department of Neurobiology, School of Medicine, University of
Pittsburgh. Neuron was identified using a patch-clamp recording technique as an inhibitory (GABAergic) neuron
based on its physiological characteristics and then it was filled intracellularly with Biocytin (brain
slice preparation). This gorgeous cell, and its equally attractive neurites, were carefully redrawn
using a Zeiss light microscope fitted with camera lucida optics.
•Such neurons are required to keep our highly excitable brains
