Fig 42-4 shows the three layers of the cerebellar cortex and cell types within each layer
Fig 42-6 shows the connections among the cortical cells, mossy fiber & climbing fiber inputs, and deep cerebellar nuclei cells
Fig 42-5 shows the parallel fibers forming “beams” along groups of Purkinje cells
The Basket Inhibitory Interneurons located in this on-beam module extend their axons into adjacent modules (gray) juxtaposed to the on-beam to create surrounding off-beams (gray). The effect of this lateral inhibitory influence is to provide an on-beam/ off-beam contrast. The inhibition of off-beam modules results in a disinhibition of the deep nuclear cells postsynaptic to them. Thus, a powerful inhibition/ disinhibition contrast in the cerebellar nucleus allows for precise, dynamic control of cerebellar output to other motor centers.
