Description: This handbook is divided into 17 chapters organized primarily by body systems, but includes some that focus on cancer, infection, genetics, and fluid and electrolytes. Each chapter gives a basic overview of the system with pathophysiological concepts that apply to that system, followed by specific disease or injury conditions. A brief overview of symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatments are included. Treatment sections cover both medical and nursing interventions.
Purpose: This handbook is designed to serve as a quick review for nurses and other health-related professionals. Material is presented in outline format. Key illustrations point out important information, and considerations related to development and cultural diversity are highlighted in special sections within each disease process as appropriate.
Audience: The book is useful for nurses, nursing students, and students in other health professions courses.
Features: The book contains an index, but not a glossary. Selected references are listed, with limited use of Internet resources for further information. Each chapter has several black-and-white illustrations of pathophysiological manifestations and liberal use of tables to make it easy to compare various disease processes. Good use of flow charts map out complex physiological processes. In the middle of the book color plates highlight specific processes in more detail. The use of "Age Alerts" for developmental issues and cultural diversity sections within appropriate disease processes is very helpful.
Assessment: This is a useful handbook for quick review of most basic pathophysiological processes that nursing students would encounter in the course of their clinicals. Although this book is not quite as comprehensive as some, the smaller size and format of a handbook will be appealing to students and the basics are well covered. On the downside, while symptoms and treatment options are included, nursing diagnoses and outcome criteria for nursing care plans are not. In addition, I noted one error in the content.
