According to the Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms, the art or science of replacing absent body part is termed Prosthetics, and any artificial replacement of an absent part of the human body is called a prosthesis.

With respect to dentistry, the noun prosthesis is described first by a type of adjective (dental, maxillofacial or ancillary) Fig. 1-4 and frequently second by use of one or more additional adjective, modifiers, to clarify such matters as anatomic location (maxillary, mandibular ...), form (complete, partial ...), materials (ceramic, resin ...) means of retention (cement, screw ...), support (tooth, implant ...) time of usage (surgical, temporary ...) or other terms (soft, zirconium ...)
