Introduction to Orthodontics

Course Description:

Knowledge of the basic of orthodontics is essential for the dental student. This course will provide the undergraduate student with the background of the normal occlusion, malocclusion, growth and development of dento-facial structures, etiology and diagnosis of malocclusion, and the treatment of discrepancies.

The course is an introductory course and consists of lectures and practical parts. The course is conducted through the whole academic year in two semesters.

First and Second Semester:

Will consist of two parts:

           One Hour         -           lecture

           Three Hour      -           Practical

Evaluation:

Student shall be evaluated by their performance during the course by continuous assessment and final examination. The total mark 100% and distributed as follows: 60% for the continuous assessment and 40% for the final examination. The detail of the distribution is described in the following table.

PDS 432

Clinical Orthodontics

Course Description:

The course consists of 16 sessions.  Each session consists of seminar and clinical orthodontics.  In the seminar, one or two students will search extensively for selected orthodontic topic and will give presentation on it followed by a group discussion on the topic with contribution of all students.  The clinical session will cover the clinical orthodontic instrumentation, case assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, the orthodontic management of different malocclusions, bonding and follow-up cases.

 The course has the following objectives:

1.    To increase the knowledge of the students in theoretical background of the selected orthodontic topics.

2.    To familiarize the students with the appropriate procedure of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

3.    To expose the students to the orthodontic management of malocclusions.

At the end of the course the students should be able to recognize and classify the different types of malocclusions and define the cases suitable for treatment.

Evaluation:

The student will be evaluated by their performance during the course.  The total grade is 100% and distributed as follows:
